This article was originally published in Communications World in March 2012. It summarizes research I did for the IABC on how to lay the groundwork for vibrant online communities. I gathered best practices for community managers around launching and maintaining work-oriented online collaboration. Our participants were community managers from a range of industries from Microsoft to the Mayo Clinic to the US Air Force. Although the focus of this project was on how organizations can foster online collaboration in employee-led communities, the insights we gained apply to any type of community.
